WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS BOMBS AT THE BOX OFFICE

Zac Efron's EDM epic suffers one of the worst openings in movie history

We Are Your Friends opened to some of the lowest box-office figures in movie history over the weekend, debuting to a dismal $1.8 million from 2,333 locations in the USA.

Distributed by Warner Bros. and directed by MTV's Catfish: The TV Show star Max Joseph, the flick follows the story of an aspiring DJ (Zac Efron) in LA, trying to hit it big alongside a gang of party promoter pals and 'Blurred Lines' babe, Emily Ratajkowski.

"This was a passion project for Zac Efron, and we believe in him," said Warners exec VP for domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein.

"Yes, the result was disappointing, but this was a small film," he continued.

On the other end of the spectrum, Universal Studios mega-hit Straight Outta Compton retained the No. 1 spot for a third week in the row, earning an impressive $13.2m (£8.6m) and pushing its domestic total to a whopping $134.1m (£87.3m), making it the highest-grossing musical biopic of all time.

We Are Your Friends is out now.
