This interactive map shows the locations of Detroit's record stores
Ahead of this month's Record Store Day, Curbed Detroit has created a handy map out every single record shop in the city that sells vinyl.
Many of the shops featured on the interactive map will be hosting special Record Store Day events this weekend (Saturday 22nd April).
Wax addicts will find an extensive list of stores that stock everything from Detroit techno to R&B and everything in between.
New vinyl pressing plant in Detroit launches with Derrick May and Carl Craig releases
Third Man Records’ pressing plant opened over the weekend (25th February) with an opening party selling releases by Derrick May and Carl Craig.
The new operation was founded by Jack White (of The White Stripes) and is the first new vinyl pressing plant in Detroit since Archer Record Pressing opened in 1965.
The 10,000 square-foot Third Man Records factory will be taking outside orders, is able to press up to 15,000 records a day and has 16 full-time members of staff recruited from the Detroit scene.
UNDERGROUND RESISTANCE RELEASING BACK CATALOGUE DIGITALLY FOR THE FIRST TIME
Mike Banks of Underground Resistance has posted on the Somewhere In Detroit Facebook page, detailing changes at Submerge Distribution, who are responsible the delivery of the techno outfit’s releases.
The message outlines difficulties that independent labels and distributers like Submerge – who also deal with the distribution of Red Planet – face in the continuing vinyl boom, before announcing that Submerge Distribution will be shifting to BandCamp for sales.

Tresor, the legendary techno nightclub brand based in Berlin, are building a new venue in Detroit.
Tresor boss Dimitri Hegemann first mentioned the idea of a stateside arm of the club in 2016, and now the new venue, titled The Packard Plant Project, appears to be fully underway.
TRESOR OWNER MAY HAVE A SPACE FOR HIS DETROIT TECHNO CLUB
Tresor owner Dimitri Hegemann revealed his desire to open a new club in Detroit in 2014, when he began talks with officials about redeveloping the abandoned car factory Fischer Body Plant No. 21.
Those plans never came to fruition, but now Hegemann could be set to team up with Arte Express, a firm owned by Fernando Palazuelo that bought the disused Packard Plant on Detroit’s east side in 2013.
‘DETROIT: TECHNO CITY’ EXHIBITION TO HIT LONDON’S ICA
London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts has announced that it will host a new exhibition called Detroit: Techno City, which will run from Wednesday 27th July to Sunday 25th September.
The exhibition explores the musical and social influences that informed the emergence of Detroit techno music from the mid-80s onwards. It will focus on how the Belleville Three, made up of Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, were at the forefront of a generation pushing the boundaries of electronic music and their sound’s subsequent rise in popularity.
MAYOR OF DETROIT DECLARES NEXT WEEK, DETROIT TECHNO WEEK
To coincide with Detroit’s Movement Festival, Detroit’s Mayor Mike Duggan has officially recognised the week of the festival as Detroit Techno Week.
“Last year, thousands of people from the region and across the globe converged on Detroit for the music festival; and Detroit becomes a tourist destination for music lovers, making the downtown entertainment venues, casinos, hotels and restaurants abuzz with activity during this 36-hour festival,” reads the official Certificate of Recognition issued by the City of Detroit.

The trouble with history is that it changes depending on who tells it. So it is that Detroit techno has three main characters, but a whole cast of unsung heroes. For every Juan Atkins, Omar S and Carl Craig over the years, there are tens if not hundreds of people who were there, living the life and making the tunes, that got sadly written out of the story over here in Europe. People like Anthony 'Shake' Shakir and Blake Baxter rarely get talked about in the same tones as Moodymann or Jeff Mills, but they should.
