DJ Mag’s top 50 albums of 2018
As both producers and audiences have opened up more and more cross-pollination between sounds in recent years, the possibilities for the album format have become endless in electronic music. And the results in 2018 have been pretty astounding.
From harrowing bass music, dissonant IDM, pulsing electro, engulfing jungle, bubbling ambient and beyond, the year has seen a raft of more esoteric works garner widespread acclaim.
Take 10: Max Cooper shares 10 tracks that inspire him
1. Future Sound Of London ‘Papa New Guinea’
“One of my first exposures to beautiful rave- influenced ambient electronic experiments as part of the ‘Lifeforms’ album. It was a signpost for what could be done.”
2. Philip Glass ‘Glassworks Opening’
“Loopy hypnotic piano, almost like techno, and part of the first ‘minimal’ genre — long before electronic music created its own. This also led me onto [the documentary] Koyaanisqatsi, which was a huge influence on my visual projects.”

He’s skilled in the production department too, with his 2017 ‘Cognitive Resonance’ single re-launching the legendary NovaMute label, and a collaboration with another techno brainbox, Max Cooper, landing on Traum Schallplatten.

MAX COOPER BLINDS US WITH SCIENCE
Max Cooper is one of the cleverest DJ/producers working in the industry today. He has a PhD in genetics, but has instead decided to make his way in electronic music.
He hasn't been averse, however, to using his scientific background to create his intricate tapestries of sound. His 'Serie' EPs for Traum Schallplatten were themed around different scientific concepts, and now his debut album — 'Human' — really showcases the depth of his talent.
