Acid House

An acid house rave VR experience with a 1989-theme has been unveiled as part of the City of Culture programme for Coventry, England, this year. 

A new radio documentary series explores the history of Irish dance music.

Across four 50-minute episodes, The Breakdown delves into three decades of electronic dance music produced and performed across the island. At the heart of the series - which is produced by musician and producer Hugh Fowler - are longstanding figures from Irish scene such as Bumble's Dave McDonnol, Mr Spring and Zero T, alongside producers including Bicep, Mano Le Tough and DJ Mag's January 2022 cover star Or:la, who dissect and share the stories behind their biggest tracks.

A new exhibition by Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller is opening this month.

A crowdfunding campaign has been launched to support the release of a brand new documentary, 'All We Wanna Do Is Dance', which captures the explosion of acid house and rave culture from the late '80s through into the '90s.

The film – directed, edited and self-financed until now by Gordon Mason – is made up of archival footage, much of it never-seen-before and captured from 1988 onwards, from various dance music hubs, such as Chicago, Manchester, London and Ibiza.

A new photobook captures the Haçienda at its prime.

Published via IDEA, photographer Peter J Walsh's Rave One! is a journey via various photos taken within the walls of the legendary Manchester venue between 1982 until its closure in 1997. The infamous nightclub is considered by many as the birthplace of acid house, and Walsh captured the club at the peak of its popularity, before the police cracked down on the venue.

A 1989 novel set in the London underground acid house scene, Trip City, is set to be republished this year by Velocity Press.

The cult classic novel, written by Trevor Miller, was originally accompanied by a cassette, featuring a five-track soundtrack by A Guy Called Gerald. Now, with the book’s reissue, the soundtrack will be released on vinyl for the very first time.

The story of rave and ecstasy in the UK has been explored in a new BBC Podcast.

The podcast, entitled Ecstasy: The Battle of Rave, will be online from the 11th September, and will present a deep dive into the emergence of rave and ecstasy into the UK in the late '80s and '90s, through factual and dramatised episodes.

The Haçienda has been recreated in VR.

Opening in 1982, the infamous Manchester nightclub is considered by many as playing a crucial part in the rise of acid house. Ultimately closing its doors in 1997, the legacy of The Haçienda lives on, and has now been recreated in VR for the first time.
