Watch a new documentary on the ‘90s warehouse rave scene in Newcastle

A new film about the '90s rave scene in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne has been released.

'The Kick, The Snare, The Hat & A Clap' is an independent film by Susie Davies that looks back to the '90s free party and warehouse scene in the city, with a particular focus on the events that took place on Ouseburn Valley, an area on the eastern part of the city that has seen significant change and gentrification since the turn of the 21st century.

Sama’ Abdulhadi is set to perform a headline show in Newcastle with DJ Mag.

Known as the “queen of the Palestinian techno scene”, DJ Mag's June cover star will be joining DJ Mag for the one-off gig at the 300-capacity World Headquarters in Newcastle, UK.

The event is scheduled to take place on the 27th August from 10pm - 4am, and tickets for the gig will go on sale this Friday 30th July from midday.

Police break up illegal rave in a filthy sewer in Newcastle

The Police were called in to break up an illegal rave in a sewer in Newcastle on Sunday morning after 200 revellers waded through a river to get to the underground location.

The illegal rave took place in a tunnel below a bridge on the River Ouseburn, where around 200 people had to wade through filthy water and cramped conditions to get to the event.

The rave was then raided by Northumbria Police at around 4am after one worried raver contacted authorities over safety fears.

From a 150-capacity venue above a pub in Newcastle called Red Rooms to Room Three at Fabric, Jaunt> has come a long way over the past six years. Shaped by the underground Newcastle nights that came before it — the likes of Shindig, Wax On, Habit and Error — the night was originally conceived to cater for the DJs that weren't getting booked in the city, while providing an outlet for a crew of clued-up students “who would take up a large chunk of any dancefloor,” says Chris Blackhall, the man who suggested a party in the first place.

When DJ Mag travelled up to Newcastle for the opening night of Digital over a decade ago (opened by 2ManyDJs, who we flew up with from Global Gathering in a helicopter, no less), we immediately dubbed it ‘the Fabric of the north’. And it’s continued to live up to the hype, booking a plethora of quality DJs over the years to play in its cool futuristic environs.

Opened by the Tokyo Industries company (who also now have a stake in Church in Leeds), Digital has won a succession of awards over the years — including Best Large Club at DJ Mag’s Best Of British awards in 2010 — and consistently placed well in this Top 100 Clubs poll. Its sister club in Brighton may be no more (it’s now The Arch), but the original north-east blueprint is still thriving. Local boy made good, Patrick Topping hosts his regular Motion party at Digital, and recent guests have included legends such as Todd Terry and Sven Väth. In addition, DJ Mag is hosting an Apollonia special on Friday 5th May, with the acclaimed French trio ably supported by the Willers Brothers and the DJ Mag Allstars.

Featured in this month's High Five, our recommended nights for January, Newcastle's Shindig has since sold out as a stampede of people purchased tickets in droves for obvious reasons.
