Cheeky Bubblers: Nine acts you need to hear this September
BLEID
BLEID
Sinistarr has been at the helm of Detroit’s d&b scene for a decade now. In that time, the prolific DJ/producer – real name Jeremy Howard – has released on some of the most revered jungle and d&b labels in the business, from Metalheadz and Renegade Hardware to Hospital.
Hey Jeremy! How has 2018 been treating you? What’s been going on? What have been some highlights?
“2018 has been wild so far and it’s still not over! I’ve had steady releases and remixes throughout the year from labels around the world, and I just came back from a crazy summer tour, playing across mainland China, Australia and Taiwan -- all for the first time, and it was all quite incredible.”
How have you grown and developed as a producer since?
Since breaking through in 2015, Agrippa has been nothing if not prolific. With a percussive, ensnaring catalog of releases under his belt already, as well as a steady stream of gigs and a recent slot on NTS with Whities’ boss Tasker, the north London-based DJ/producer – real name Will Hart – has been on a rapid trajectory that has shown no signs of slowing. The future, it seems, is bass lead.
Hart has made music from an early age, learning drums as a child (“shout out mum and dad”) and going on to play in numerous bands as a teenager. From there, an open minded head of music at school (“Shout out to Paul”) meant that Hart was able to make dubstep and drum & bass for his GCSE music pieces in 2011. Following a break from music during his A-Levels, Hart learned to DJ through a friend and subsequently became a resident at some hometown parties.
“I also have to mention a couple of key people who helped me out a lot throughout the first couple of years,” he adds. “Fred and Freddy for handling my gigs, being so supportive and nailing their new Keep Hush! ventures. Silas and Will (Silas and Snare) for putting my first tune on vinyl and for lots of advice (and tunes!). The original CJaw gang; Matt, Sam and Andy, for making me get music out in the first place, and Madam X (Shouts to Crissi) for a lot of support of myself and the Meta boys.
Hessle Audio have shared details for the debut album from UK producer Bruce.
The groundbreaking UK label – helmed by Ben UFO, Pangaea and Pearson Sound – will release the 11-track LP on 26th October. It marks the DJ/producer’s third appearance on the label, having dropped the ‘Not Stochastic’ and ‘Steals’ EPs in 2014 and 2016 respectively. Bruce – real name Larry McCarthy – has also released on revered UK labels Timedance, Hemlock Recordings, Livity Sound and Idle Hands.
Throw your summer anthems out the filthy window you cowards, this is the track of the season. Emerging UK label Par Avion have their debut release landing next Friday 10th August and with three equally blazing cuts in the pocket, this is the very definition of a bold introduction.
Last year, Sheffield-based producer Yak dropped a track that, unbeknownst to him, would end up being picked up by some of the most revered DJs on the circuit. ‘Mido’, an agile and propulsive techno-heater released on Orson’s Version imprint, had all the off-kilter verve of releases found on Hessle Audio and Timedance but wielded enough immediacy and percussive heft to slot comfortably into any set it found itself in.
Detroit bass producer Sinistarr is the latest artist to step up on Italian label Beat Machine’s Swinging Flavours 7” inch series.
The footwork aficionado and sound designer supreme takes us on a typically fervent outing on ‘55555’, a melodic dish of flute-like synths, gripping bass, chopped vocals and hectic percussion.
Cassius Select is set to make his Hypercolour debut on 22nd June with his ‘Fake Death’ EP.
The Sydney-based producer – real name Lavurn Lee – is best known for his lurching, rattling beats and on this new EP he is on top form with loose atmospheric layers billowing in throughout to make an uneasy but nevertheless enchanting listen.
‘Cartoon’ is razor sharp and bracing, chock with angular groove and incendiary energy. Check it out below.
Pre-order the EP on 12” or digital here.
Denham Audio team up with MC Serocee for raw vocal cut 'Masta Blastah' on Durkle Disco, complete with this booming, bass-driven remix from Bristol's Bromley.
Stripping back the smokey, laser-pierced original, Bromley ramps up the low-end and picks out a slick groove, giving the track a lethargic feel while still letting Serocee's tough lyricism to punch through the mix and up the energy.
Jamz Supernova takes a step away from her BBC Radio 1Xtra shows to drop a club-ready Fresh Kicks mix!
Discovered by the BBC after she landed a residency on South London's Reprezent Radio, Jamz now hosts three shows a week on 1Xtra, profiling new talent through features like her DIY Generation spot and playing all the latest in future R&B and hip-hop.
